Rob Shaw Motivational Interviewing

Supporting meaningful, self‑directed change through Motivational Interviewing.

Welcome

Motivational Interviewing (MI) training, coaching, and one‑to‑one work for practitioners, organisations, and individuals.

Grounded in twenty years of frontline practice across substance use, health, and community settings, and is shaped by a commitment to compassion, collaboration, and respect for autonomy.

Whether you are looking to develop MI skills, embed MI within a service, or work one‑to‑one to explore change, this site sets out the different ways I work and how each option fits together

What I Offer

Training and Commissioned Work

Motivational Interviewing training for organisations and teams, including:

  • Commissioned in‑house training programmes

  • Open courses that individuals and small teams can book onto

  • Ongoing coaching, supervision, and skills development

Training is designed to support MI skill development over time, combining workshops, reflective practice, and individual coaching in ways that reflect how MI is learned and sustained in real‑world settings.

One-to-One Work

In addition to training, I offer one‑to‑one Motivational Interviewing conversations, focused on exploring and supporting change.

This work is open to anyone. It can be especially helpful if you feel stuck or unsure about making a change, or if you’re a practitioner interested in experiencing Motivational Interviewing from the client’s perspective.

Sessions are collaborative, respectful, and non‑directive, and are grounded in

My Approach

Across all areas of my work, I aim to model the spirit of Motivational Interviewing rather than simply describe it.

My approach is:

  • Collaborative – working alongside people rather than directing them

  • Evidence‑based – informed by MI research and good practice

  • Trauma‑informed – attentive to complexity, safety, and context

  • Practical – focused on what is usable in real‑world roles and lives

You can read more about how training and coaching are structured on the Approach page.
