One-to-One Work

This page describes my one‑to‑one Motivational Interviewing work, which is distinct from training and education. It is experiential, collaborative, and focused on real‑life change rather than learning a model or set of skills

What this is

This is Motivational Interviewing in practice rather than training or therapy.

The work offers a structured, reflective space to explore ambivalence, strengthen motivation, and clarify next steps. Rather than giving advice or directing change, sessions focus on understanding what matters to you and supporting change that feels realistic, self‑directed, and sustainable.

This work draws on the same evidence base and spirit as MI training but is experienced from the inside – as a conversation rather than a curriculum

  • MI training is designed to help practitioners learn and apply MI skills with others.

MI in Practice reflects the direct use of Motivational Interviewing in supportive, helping conversations that focus on change.

Rather than teaching MI, the work uses MI as the method itself. Sessions focus on evoking and strengthening motivation around changes that matter to you, guided by your values, priorities, and readiness.

    • There is no teaching, role‑play, or assessment

    • The work centres on evoking change talk, resolving ambivalence, and strengthening commitment

    • Pace and direction emerge collaboratively rather than being set in advance

Some people come to this work to explore personal change with focused, MI‑consistent support. Others are practitioners who choose to experience Motivational Interviewing from the client perspective, deepening their understanding of how MI feels and functions in practice..

  • This approach can be helpful for:

    • People feeling stuck or conflicted about change

    • Individuals thinking about changes related to health, substance use, work, or life direction

    • Practitioners undertaking MI training who want to experience MI from the client perspective

    • People who value a collaborative, non‑directive alternative to advice‑giving or problem‑solving approaches

You do not need to be in crisis, and you do not need to have a clear goal before starting.

    • 4 × 50‑minute individual sessions

    • Sessions are usually spaced fortnightly or monthly

    • Delivered online (or in person by arrangement)

This four‑session structure provides enough continuity for depth while keeping the work bounded and focused.

    • £50 per session

    • Sessions are booked as a four‑session block description

  • This work sits alongside my training offer but is entirely optional.

    Some people use it as:

    • A standalone space for reflection and change

    • A complement to MI training

    • A way to reconnect with the spirit of MI amid busy or demanding roles

Participation in one‑to‑one work does not involve assessment, coding, or evaluation, and it is kept clearly separate from any training or organisational contracts

  • If you’d like to explore whether this work would be a good fit, you’re very welcome to get in touch for an initial conversation.
